The Cognitive Science Behind Vedic Maths

Vedic Mathematics isn't magic—it's a sophisticated system of mental mathematics that works in harmony with how our brains naturally process numbers. It feels effortless because it's more intuitive and less taxing on our cognitive resources.
Traditional math often requires holding multiple numbers in your working memory (e.g., "carrying over"). Vedic Maths techniques, like the Vertically and Crosswise method, break down problems into smaller, manageable chunks that are processed one at a time. This reduces the strain on your working memory, freeing up mental bandwidth and reducing errors.
Our brains are natural pattern-recognition machines. Vedic Maths is built on the inherent patterns and coherence of the number system. Sutras like "By one more than the one before" for squaring numbers ending in 5, leverage these patterns, making calculations feel natural and logical rather than abstract and rule-based.
We read and process information from left to right. Vedic Maths aligns with this natural flow. When you calculate 45 + 23, a Vedic approach might be (40+20) + (5+3) = 60 + 8 = 68. You get the most significant part of the answer first, which is more intuitive and often allows for quicker estimations.
